Well, it's been a Mountains & The Trees morning for me, I've been listening to the new r3 sessions podcast so today's song might as well be from the same.  Here's Jon Janes, aka: The Mountains & The Trees, with a catchy little toe-tapper called Let's Go Out Tonite!

That's right - after 31 years, Sony has stopped making the cassette playing walkman.  I didn't even know that they started making them the same year that I was born!!  Crazoo!

the new Tron

I admit it.  When I first heard "they" were making a new Tron, I was skeptical.  And when I saw the first teaser I wasn't all that impressed.  But then this trailer emerged and by-golly, I'm excited!

Rae Spoon - Come On Forest Fire Burn The Disco Down

A few years back, my buddy Patick lent me Rae Spoon's Throw Some Dirt On Me and I wasn't a fan.  Flash-forward a few years and I can't stop tappin' my feet and clappin' my hands to Come On Forest Fire Burn The Disco Down off the album superioryouareinferior.  I think I owe it to myself to go back and relisten to Rae's older stuff, cuz it's pretty damn great!

OMG!

I'm not a big fan of wearing watches, but I think I just found me one that I might need to have.  Heck yeah!

Vigil for queer youth suicide awareness in Emery Barnes Park last night

Roughly 500 people turned out at a rally in Vancouver's Emery Barnes Park last night calling for an end to the bullying of gay youths.  Do you notice all the purple people are wearing?  I had to work last night, otherwise I probably would've been there too.

Here's a video:

Tokyo Police Club - Wait Up (Boots of Danger)

I don't know when it happened, but I kind of fell in love with these guys.  When I lived in Calgary I didn't pay any attention to them, they'd come play a show and I'd have no reason to check them out, and now I listen to them all the time - there've been many a day where their playlist on r3 is the only one I play all day and I don't even know when they're going to be playing another show here in Vancouver so that I can go check 'em out live.  All in good time I guess.

In the meantime, you can click here to listen to Wait Up (Boots of Danger) and see what I'm going on about!

I'm wearing purple today. Are you?

And if you're not wearing purple today, you really should be, to show your support for victims of homophobia.

Luke Doucet - Blood's Too Rich

I saw Luke Doucet a few years back at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary where he was opening for Blue Rodeo.  He had a broken hand, but played on just the same - it was a great show and I was kinda’ blown away!  Broken One and The Comandante are also great tracks that you should listen to at some point.  I think you'll be in love with Luke Doucet and the White Falcon too!

"Hang Them"? Really?

Holy Fuck - I'm so glad that I don't live in Uganda!

Just five days before the one year anniversary of the introduction of legislation that could lead to the execution of gays and lesbians in Uganda, a Ugandan newspaper has printed the names, addresses and pictures of the countries "top 100 homos" with a yellow banner that reads: Hang Them.

Xtra!'s article here

Seriously?  It's almost 2011 & I can't believe this shit goes on it the world.
I am so proud and I am so damn lucky that I live in Canada.  True, we still have problems with homophobia in our country and bullying in our schools, but nothing nearly as serious as a death penalty or life in prison simply because you're attracted to the same sex.
Holy crazy!

Song of the Day - Tuesday October 19th, 2010

Elliott Brood - Fingers and Tongues

From the bands page on r3:
Elliott Brood - Death Country – dark, gritty folk soul music built around whiskey - drenched vocals and lyrics evoking images of love, loss and murder. In their soul-thumping bluegrass songs, banjo keeps time to a strange and chunky angular stomp, with vicious Kentucky-hardcore acoustic guitar and somber, achingly confessional vocal harmonies.

And although Elliott Brood is currently touring in Australia and won't be coming to my neck of the woods anytime soon, I can't help but feel a little gitty at the thought of seeing these guys play live.  I'm already starting to save a little cash for when tickets go on sale!  And I think I might be needin' a t-shirt when I get there too!

Diamond Rings' new album, Special Affections, is streaming all week long on exclaim.ca.  I've only listened to a few track so far and I'm loving it, especially You & Me and It's Not My Party.

Guess who's coming to town....

Jay Brannan is!

November 23rd at the Biltmore.
I saw him last time he came to town and he put on a great show!
And Xtra! was giving away tickets too, but it looks like the contest is closed now.  If you entered you should still invite me to go with you once you win.  I think that's a great idea!

Hey Ocean! - Wise

After listening to David Vertesi reminded me about how much I love Hey Ocean!  So much so, that I've been listening to them for most of the day today.  This song is the first song that I'd heard from the group and it is still my absolute favorite.  I can listen to it on repeat for hours!

It Gets Better

If you haven't heard of the It Gets Better Project yet, let me bring you up to speed.  The It Gets Better Project is an online video channel started by Dan Savage in September of this year in response to the suicide of Billy Lucas and the recent suicides of a number of other teenagers who were bullied because they were gay or their peers thought that they were.  Its goal?  To prevent suicide amongst GLBT youth by having GLBT adults convey the message that these teens' lives will improve.

Here's an excerpt directly from the project's website:

For too long, LGBT youth have been forced to struggle through their formative years suffering from bullies in their schools, churches and homes — and with no support system to provide them any help.

Noted writer and media pundit Dan Savage founded the It Gets Better Project in September 2010 as a unique way for supporters everywhere to tell LGBT Youth that — it gets better.

Closed-minded school administrators and parents may not let LGBT adults talk directly to their children about their futures, but we don’t have to get permission to tell kids that life gets better. That’s why we’re compiling a video archive to share the stories of people overcoming bullying and finding happiness.

www.ItGetsBetterProject.com is a place where young people who are gay, lesbian, bi, or trans can see with their own eyes how love and happiness can be a reality in their future. It’s a place where LGBT adults can share the stories of their lives, and straight allies can add their names in solidarity and help spread our message of hope.

This is one hell of an amazing project and I couldn't be happier to support it.  I personally believe that what you do in a day affects the whole universe, so I'm spreading the word today.

I hope you visit the website and start spreading the word as well!

Thank you.

Stop hitting yourself.

David Vertesi - Gentlemen Say

If you're a fan of Hey Ocean! like me, you probably recognize the name David Vertesi.  You might also recognize him from his collaberations with Hannah Georgas or Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party or Shad K.
Well, he's just finished up his first solo album, Cardiography, which is set for release on October 26th.  I can't wait to hear the whole thing, but for now, here's "Gentlemen Say":

Morning news sucks

I got on the bus this morning and picked up my free copy of The Province and the first thing I read was about how some newspaper delivery guy was shit-kicked by 3 off-duty drunk cops, and the trial that's going on right now.  This is not the type of shit I think I should be injesting first thing in the morning.  I've grown tired of all the negative news that's shoved in my face everyday, therefore I won't be reading or taking in any crap news anymore, except for the fun stuff that makes me smile.....like how Gavin Rossdale (aka: Gwen Stafani's hubby) has said that he had a gay fling with some pop star back in the 80's......  http://entertainment.ca.msn.com/celebs/news/article.aspx?cp-documentid=25932219

Big smiles!

Bodhi Jones - I Used To Know How

Bodhi Jones is a professional busker who performs on the streets of Vancouver, and although I've lived here for more than 2 years, I still haven't seen him.  Luckily for me, as fall comes around and the weather turns south and it's not so nice out he plays more indoor venues.  I think I'll be seeing him either October 24th at the Railway Club or October 29th at the Waves on Howe.  Let me know if you wanna go - we can go together.  And if we miss those two, we can always catch the "Last Busk of the Year" on October 31st, although I don't know where he'll be busking and it'll also be Halloween (aka: the best holiday of the year!).

So here's my track of the day - It's a song that reminds me of when I was pretty young and I could control the wind and stop the snow from falling.  Enjoy!

Judge overrules U.S. military gay ban! Woot! Woot!

Heck yeah - and it's about time too!

What started in 1993 (aka: 17 years ago), the infamous "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy banning openly gay and lesbian troops to serve in the US Military looks like it's finally coming to an end after US federal judge, Virginia Phillips, ordered a country-wide injunction to stop the enforcement of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

If you don't know who Spandy Andy is, you're missing out!  Simply put, he's amazing!  You might've seen him dancing his ass off around Vancouver at English Bay or on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallary, or maybe you caught him on TV auditioning for So You Think You Can Dance Canada.  And maybe you haven't caught him anywhere, which is where I can help you out.  Here's a little documentary titled: SpandyAndy - Tight Bright & Fearless.

Song of the Day - Friday, October 8th, 2010

I figure I might as well start a song of the day feature here too, seeing as I'm constantly finding and falling in love with so many differant songs (most of which are on CBC Radio3, not all, but most).

So here's a sweet track from some boys originally from Kelowna who've recently made the move to Vancouver.  I can't wait to see these guys live - I can't imagine their live show being anything less than amazing.  Here's Summer Song by Treelines. Try not tapping your foot to this one!

Heart Attach Potatoes

I was just listening to/reading r3, and Ms. Lana Gay has posted a recipe for the upcoming holiday.  I love me some potatoes in pretty much every form, and I have a feeling I'll be making these babies sometime soon.  Here's the recipe as posted on radio3:

Heart Attack Potatoes:

2 lbs. frozen hash browns, thawed
3/4 cups melted butter
1/2 cups chopped onion
1 can cream of whatever soup (asparagus? chicken? you pick)
1 large container of sour cream
2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
2.5 cups crushed cornflakes

Combine potatoes with 1/2 cup butter and everything else except cornflakes.
Fry 1/4 cup butter and cornflakes together in a pan and place on top.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
Eat. Complain about the pains in your chest.

I can't wait!!

r3 is the shit

If there's one thing I love & can never get enough of, it'd be music.  Luckily for me, I refound & re-fell in love with CBC Radio 3.  Here's a playlist of some of the great tunes that I've been listening to for the past while.

click here -> http://r3.ca/0Aa2

Warning: All of these tracks are pretty damn addicting!
You've been warned.

First post on this here new blog o' mine!

Well kids, it's been a while since I've done any blogging, and that's about to change.  I've been thinking of starting a new blog for a while now to share all the things that I find interesting or fascinating in the world, you know, like: movies, movie previews, current events, improper grammatical usage in news articles, comics, funnies, new music that I've fallen in love with and anything that feel like sharing with the masses.  My last blog, sometime in ten, was a great way for me to keep my peeps back home abreast of my goings on since moving to Vancouver and it was a wonderful adventure, but I've been here for over two years now and it's time for a new thing - a new refreshingly awesome blog in this case.  I still love going back and reading old posts and comments on sometime in ten (and you should too!), they make me smile & laugh which are two of my favorite things in the world.  Smiling & laughing.  Can't get much better than that!

So, without further ado - - - -  Welcome to "quick dash" -  my new space!
I hope you enjoy it.  We can enjoy together.  It's gonna be sweet!

Lots o' love,
-chris
